Health Roundtable Team

The Health Roundtable Perioperative Medicine workshop held in Brisbane on the 4th and 5th of June was a wonderful exchange of knowledge and fabulous networking opportunity for attendees.

Health Roundtable would like to thank Dr Margot Lodge (Geriatrician, Alfred Health) for her keynote presentation on The Alfred’s Perioperative Medicine model, and for facilitation of a highly experienced panel which included:

· Dr Margot Lodge (Geriatrician, Alfred Health)

· Dr Jeremy Fernando (Intensivist, St Vincent’s Private Hospital)

· Prof Alison Mudge (Physician/Research, RBWH)

· Dr Carl Lisec (Surgeon, RBWH)

· Jessica Bresolin (CNC, Wollongong Hospital)

· Claire Hackett (Allied Health, PAH)

The panel worked through a case study of an 87 year old comorbid patient presenting for emergency laparotomy. The knowledge of the panellists was augmented by contributions from an engaged audience as they worked through the case.

Health Roundtable presented data to show the impact this type of complexity is having on length of stay, readmissions, hospital acquired complications and the significant associated costs relating to a specific surgical procedure such as emergency laparotomy.

Attendees also enjoyed presentations on the Perioperative Medicine models at QEII Jubilee Hospital (Dr David Stewart, Intensivist), Royal Brisbane & Women’s Hospital (Dr Carl Lisec, Trauma Surgeon), and Monash Health (Drs Belinda Phillips and Rona Zhao). Claire Sage (General Manager Surgery, Monash Health) presented an Unplanned Surgical Dashboard which was the top-voted Surgical Journey innovation for 2024.

The STARS team of Rebecca Pickering and Jane Holt took attendees through the evolution and impressive outcomes of Queensland’s Post-Operative Discharge Support Service (PODSS). All the presentations have been uploaded to the Health Roundtable members Innovation Library.

A deep dive into Health Roundtable Surgical journey data and facilitated action planning rounded out a fascinating two days with a broad range of colleagues.
